The Merry-Go-Round 🎠 Method to Growing on Social

We're testing some new days and times for our emails! Got a preference? Let me know!

When I was about 11 years old, my two younger sisters and I would pack a boombox and some snacks and walk from our grandmother’s beach house to a playground a few blocks away.

It had everything a playground should have: monkey bars, swings, a set of seesaws, and a slide. But the heavyweight champ of playground fun? An old-school merry-go-round!

And that bad boy was no joke. 🎠

It took serious work from all three of us to get the giant wheel moving, and we had to push with every muscle in our bodies. We always hoped that the other kids would come to play because the more hands that helped, the faster and easier it was to turn.

The Merry-Go-Round Effect

The cool part: once the merry-go-round wheel got going, it kept spinning on its own. We didn’t need to push it as hard because the energy we had built up helped it keep moving.

This is what we call the merry-go-round effect. Once an object starts to spin, momentum continues to grow. And something similar can happen on social media that can help you grow and gain traction with your brand.

When you start, growing your brand on a social network feels slow and difficult. Yet, as more people discover you, engage with your content and start to share your message, you begin to get noticed more. This is the power of the network!

Why You Need Friends to Help ‘Push’

Social networks also thrive on collaboration and community. When users engage in conversations and share diverse opinions, it keeps people interested and invested in the network, which of course makes advertisers happy.

However, collaboration and conversation aren't just good for the platform. They can also greatly benefit your personal brand.

Think of your collaborators as the friends who help you push that giant wheel. When you team up with other creators in your niche, new doors open, exposing you to larger audiences and boosting your visibility. It's like having more hands on the merry-go-round, propelling it faster and farther.

So, how can you create this captivating ride for your brand? It's simple, really.

  1. Seek connections with like-minded individuals who share your passions and goals.
  2. Engage with their content, leaving thoughtful comments and showcasing your expertise.
  3. When creating your own content, tag your collaborators, inviting them to join the conversation and contribute their unique perspectives.

How to Keep the Merry-Go-Round Spinning

"But hold on a second!" you might say. "Why do we need personal stories when we're on social media for business? Can't we just talk about our products and services?"

Unfortunately, the answer is NO. Being 'strictly business' is like riding a merry-go-round with no Rick Astley and no laughter—it's dull and uninteresting. No one wants to hop on that joyless ride, except maybe your competitors. If you want to grab attention, clicks, views, and all the momentum you need to grow your brand online, you need to spice up your content.

That's where your personal story comes in.

People crave relatable content that tickles their funnybone, sparks motivation, or sends shivers of inspiration down their spine. And let's get real, those connections rarely come from dry, business-related topics. It's your personal experiences that have the power to forge a bond, making you interesting, likable, and relatable!

Just like the brightly colored paint on playground equipment, your personal story brings a breath of authenticity, experience, and a unique perspective to your brand or message.

By putting your personal story at the center of your content strategy, you start to create a powerful feedback loop. Your story attracts a specific audience, builds trust, and fosters engagement. This engagement, in turn, amplifies your reach and influence, allowing you to refine and enhance your content, ultimately driving further growth and impact.

So, fearless riders: are you ready to captivate your audience? Find your friendly collaborators on social media, be open to ‘playing’, and watch as your personal brand starts to grow.

Until next time!
